The woman who drove the SUV that hit a parked van on an expressway, sending the 68-year-old van owner into a fatal plunge, has faced three charges.
Nutchanat Promma, 34, driver of the Toyota Fortuner, has been charged with reckless driving causing death, injuries and damage to other people’s property, said Pol Lt Col Chatchai Iem-ong, deputy superintendent of the Expressway Police Traffic Division 2, who handled the case.
Investigators were gathering evidence and examining footage of closed-circuit television cameras to find additional charges against her.
Ms Nutchanat was driving on the shoulder of Chalongrat Expressway near the exit of Sukhumvit 50 in Bangkok’s Vadhana district when her vehicle hit the parked Kia van during rush hours on Monday evening. The force of the crash sent Ms Thannapat Wipanpong, 68, into a fatal plunge to the road below.
Two other people — Pol Sub Lt Supoj Chainok and Ms Khemmanat Rungruengwisit, 27, a pregnant passenger in the van — were injured.
Ms Thannapat had parked her van on the road shoulder after an engine problem. She was standing near the van while Pol Sub Lt Supoj tried to repair it.
Pol Lt Col Chatchai said Ms Nutchanat, who was also injured, was being treated at a hospital under police watch.
Ms Khemmant, who was a daughter-in-law of the dead victim, was also under medical treatment.
