An 82-year-old woman driver died and three other people were injured in a head-on car crash.
The smash happened on Thursday evening on the A710 near Kippford, Kirkcudbrightshire.
The woman, who was travelling alone, died at the scene.
Two men, aged 83 and 23, and a 20-year-old woman in the other car were taken to Dumfries Infirmary for treatment.
Both cars were Vauxhall Astras. One of them is believed to have caught fire but it was quickly extinguished.
The road was closed for about six hours after the accident at 9.35pm.
Sergeant Paul Dodds said: “An investigation is under way. I am appealing to anyone who was on the A710 around the time of the incident to contact us.
“In particular, I’m asking motorists with dash-cams to check their footage.”
Also on Thursday night, a motorcyclist died following a crash with a lorry on the A85 at Achnacloich, south of Oban.
It happened at about about 6.40pm.
