A nurse who was at the scene of the crash, told the ECHO: "A lady was stuck under the van and about 20 people lifted it off her and dragged her out. She was conscious and breathing throughout. I am an off duty nurse and my partner who helped was an off duty paramedic."

The road remains closed with motorists advised to avoid the area. INRIX traffic monitor said: "A59 Liverpool Road South in both directions closed, heavy traffic due to accident between Abbey Lane and Mill Dam Lane."

Lancs Roads Police tweeted: "The emergency services are dealing with a serious road traffic collision on the A59 Liverpool Road, Burscough, close to Abbey Lane. A road closure has been put in place and we would ask motorists to avoid the area if possible. We will update you as soon as we can."
