Woman dragged from burning house as firefighters find her in blaze

Police and fire officials have launched an investigation after a woman was rescued from her blazing home and taken to hospital this morning.

Three fire engines and an air ambulance were among emergency vehicles to descend on the street after neighbours were alerted to the sound of a smoke alarm.

Pictures show police close to the scene of the fire on the ground floor of the house in Graylag Close, in the Beechwood area of Runcorn.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were called around 7.20am and after sending three fire engines from Runcorn, Widnes and Frodsham - firefighters entered the burning property and found the woman inside.

They were able to save her from the burning building.

She has since been taken to hospital but the extent of any injuries is not known.

A spokesman Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "At around 7.20am firefighters were called to reports of a smoke alarm sounding at an occupied semi-detached house in Graylag Close, Beechwood, Runcorn..

"On arrival firefighters discovered that a fire on the ground floor of the house had activated the alarm. Firefighters got a woman out of the house and administered first aid before handing her over to the care of paramedics."

A cordon was set up and the gas and electricity supplies to the house were isolated as four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus fought the fire with two hose reel jets.

As of 9.40am only one fire engine remained at the scene.

Cheshire Police confirmed they were present and "an investigation into the cause of the fire" was underway.

North West Ambulance Service said they were called at 7.37am. Although an air ambulance was sent the female patient was taken to hospital by a road ambulance.
