Woman 'dragged across pavement' by dog snatcher while on walk in terrifying ordeal

A woman who was out walking her dog has been left shocked and scared after she was "dragged across the pavement" by a dog snatcher.

The woman from Leeds had decided to take a different route than usual but ended up at the centre of a terrifying ordeal.

She claims that a man "came out from nowhere" before trying to snatch her French bulldog.

The 33-year-old said the incident has now left her nervous to go out again.

The attempted snatch happened last Wednesday in Cabbage Hill, Wortley, West Yorks, with the woman, who wished to remain anonymous, telling LeedsLive : "My worst fear happened to me while walking my dog.

"A man came out of nowhere and grabbed my dog from behind me and tried to snatch her.

"Thankfully I always keep my dogs on a short lead.

"I had no intention of letting go without a fight. I wasn’t letting go of her for anything.

"He was pulling my dog from her back end in the air.

"As he picked her up I had hold of her lead attached to her harness and I didn’t let go.

"He pulled her more I ended up being pulled to the floor and slipping on the gravel. I was dragged along the gravel as he pulled her."

The Leeds resident was left with a grazed hand and sore hip, although the dog remained unharmed.

"I think he expected to do a quick grab and run but didn’t expect me to put up as much as I fight like I did and hold on as much as I did, with him coming from behind us," she added.

"I also carry an alarm with me which I managed to set off after I was pulled to the ground.

"He then dropped her and ran off so I ran home."

The owner shared her horrifying experience on social media, with many jumping to offer their support.

She reported the incident to police and said an investigation is being carried out.

She added: "It’s all still very much a blur, I’m suffering bad with my anxiety and I’m scared.

"I just wanted to spread awareness to people who walk their dogs in this area and surrounding. Please be careful, alert and stay safe.

"I need to build my confidence up to go back out with the dogs.

"I rang the police as soon as I got home. They came and took a statement.

"Unfortunately there isn't any CCTV in the area so they would need to see if he came out of one of the exists near a camera."

A spokesperson from West Yorkshire Police said: "Police received a report of an attempted robbery which is reported to have occurred at around 12.45pm on May 24, on Cabbage Hill, Wortley.

"At this time, no suspect has been identified but officers will act on any new information which could provide new lines of enquiry.

"The local neighbourhood policing team is aware of this offence and conducting patrols in the area."
