Woman disgusted by takeaway pizza that smelt 'like sick'

A woman said she was disgusted to find a sticky, foul smelling substance on a pizza she had ordered after already having eaten some slices.

Lucie, 23, had decided to order a pizza from Papa John's on Prescot Street - opposite the Royal Liverpool Hospital - on Saturday, May 1.

She told the ECHO that she had received some good news that day and wanted to celebrate with pizza with her boyfriend.

Lucie from Kensington said they ordered a pizza called The Works - with sweetcorn and red chilli's added as extra - through the Papa John's app which arrived around 9pm.

The customer services worker said: "We ate the sides first and then opened the pizza.

"I had eaten a couple of the slices when I noticed one of the slices had this sticky beige substance.

"I smelled it and it had this odd acidic, almost sicky smell to it. I got my boyfriend to smell it as well and he agreed that it smelled horrible.

"We didn't finish the pizza and I got on to Papa John's website and completed the online web form and also Tweeted about it.

"Their Twitter team got in contact with me the next day and said they couldn't help much as they were only the social media department, but because I had pictures I was able to throw away the pizza and that shouldn't be an issue.

"I've since found out that was incorrect information because they said as they can't determine the source of the substance all they can do is refund the order and give me a voucher for a free, large pizza which to be honest is a slap in the face because I don't ever want to go to Papa John's let alone that branch again."

Lucie said she still kept the pizza in Tupperware in her fridge for a week after she had been told to throw it away, but went with the Papa John's Twitter team's advice as "it was making my stomach turn".

She said Papa John's told her that a food hygiene check had been performed after her complaint but that it felt pointless, especially as it was two weeks after the order.

She said: "To be honest I felt absolutely disgusted. My boyfriend had eaten about half of his pizza by the time so he also was not too happy.

"It feels like a joke because I had the pictures and a screenshot of what their Twitter team said telling me I could throw it away. And now it's like you were given the wrong information, too bad.

"Now I always check everything before I start eating. Usually I would just start eating whatever is there and never check the order before I'm ready to eat it.

"We have only ordered one take away since then and I checked every box to make sure everything was fine."

She added: "I really don’t feel like a refund and an apology is suitable due to the severe nature of the case, especially due to the fact we are currently in a global pandemic.

"If it was bodily fluids it makes it so much more dangerous than it would during normal times."

The ECHO approached Papa John's for comment but has not yet received a response.
