Woman 'disgusted' after seeing the S*n being sold in shop

A woman has said she was "disgusted" after discovering the S*n newspaper on sale in Spar's Formby branch.

Lucy O'Brien, 22, said she walked into the Spar on Green Lane in Formby when she saw the newspaper being sold. The S*n has been boycotted throughout Merseyside and beyond ever since it printed untruthful allegations about the behaviour of Liverpool supporters during the 1989 Hillsborough disaster in which 97 people were unlawfully killed.

Lucy who was in the shop with her dad Francis himself a Hillsborough survivor said she "could not believe" Spar would sell something that has been "so harmful to the city".

Speaking to the ECHO she said: "I was mortified and I saw my dad's face drop he did not say anything but I knew it had upset him. For anyone who was there, it would bring the memories back. I think it just caught him off guard.

"I don't want to let this pass by, nobody should have to walk into that shop and see the paper. Ann Williams was from Formby and her son Kevin died at Hillsborough. She campaigned for years and I'm so appalled it is being distributed there."

Lucy said that she contact the Spar head office but felt like they "ignored" her complaints. The ECHO also contacted the Spar on Green Lane but they declined to comment on the situation.

The S*n has been boycotted since the disaster happened and in 2017 Liverpool FC banned journalists from the paper reporting from Anfield or at press conferences. It is estimated the boycott has cost the newspaper millions of pounds in revenue since 1989.

Lucy who recently moved to Formby recently said: "It so so much more than the newspaper people lost family members and people they loved. They spread lies about and it has massively effected the city.

"My dad does not talk to me about what happened and I think he is still so hurt from it. When I saw the paper I thought it was not right. This should not be going on in Liverpool."
