Woman discovers she's a wanted felon for failing to return video rented in 1999

A US woman recently discovered she was wanted by police after allegedly failing to return a VHS tape that was rented in 1999.

Caron McBride was shocked to find out she was a wanted woman over the long-overdue video - which she says she didn't even rent.

She was accused of renting the VHS tape from a store in the town of Norman, Cleveland County, which unsurprisingly is now closed.

Officials can still prosecute her because a warrant and charges were filed in 2000 after the video became overdue, reports FOX 25.

But the Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office is allegedly not pursuing charges in the 21-year-old case.

Ms McBride said she found out about the charges after trying to change her name on her driving licence after getting married.

"I went to change my driver's license, during this COVID thing you had to make an appointment, and so, I sent them an email (and) they sent me an email and they told me... that I had an issue in Oklahoma and this was the reference number for me to call this number and I did," she told FOX.

After phoning the Attorney's Office, she said she thought she was about to have a "heart attack" after learning of the charge.

"She told me it was over the VHS tape and I had to make her repeat it because I thought, this is insane. This girl is kidding me, right? She wasn't kidding," she added.

Ms McBride said she has never watched Sabrina the Teenage Witch and believes it could have been rented by her roommate at the time, who had two young daughters.

According to FOX 25, Ms McBride was charged with felony embezzlement of rented property for the tape of “Sabrina the Teenage Witch”.

She said: “I have never watched that show in my entire life, just not my cup of tea, meanwhile, I'm a wanted felon for a VHS tape."

Following a review of the case, the charge has now been dismissed, but Ms McBride still needs to clear her record.

She said she has previously been let go from jobs over the years and believes this could be why.

"It's a serious issue," McBride said to local radio station KFOR. "It's caused me and my family a lot of heartache financially because of the positions I've lost because of those two words. Something's got to give."
