SAN DIEGO _ A woman was struck and killed by an armored truck on her 22nd birthday as she walked toward her boyfriend at a La Jolla Village shopping center Tuesday, authorities said.
Mikaela Jones had parked her car and was walking toward her boyfriend standing across the street when she was hit by the truck about 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the La Jolla Village Square on Villa La Jolla, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.
The driver of a Garda armored vehicle was making his rounds when he came around a corner and didn't see the victim standing in the street, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.
Alcohol was not suspected as a factor in the accident, San Diego police said.
Jones was taken to nearby hospital, but she could not be resuscitated and died around 6:30 p.m., the medical examiner's office said.
The driver of the armored truck, whose name was not released, remained at the scene and was cooperative with the investigation, Buttle said.
