Woman dies just hours after undergoing liposuction and tummy tuck at hospital

A woman has died after undergoing liposuction and a tummy tuck at a cosmetic clinic.

Gleyciane Alves Maciel Brito, 38, went into cardiorespiratory arrest about 12 hours after surgery.

Cops have launched an investigation into her death on April 25.

The operation took place at the Mineiro Obesity Institute Hospital in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

A Civil Police of Minas Gerais spokesperson said: "We have launched an investigation to determine the cause and circumstances of the woman's death during a surgical procedure at a clinic located in the Lourdes neighbourhood.

"Additional information will be supplied during the course of the investigation."

The clinic said in a statement: "The hospital deeply regrets the patient's death, which occurred after an abdominoplasty and liposuction surgery, and she died a few hours after the operation, possibly due to massive thromboembolism.

"The patient had a previous history of thrombosis.

"Her body was sent to the Legal Medical Institute to clarify the cause of death."

The statement added: "All measures to prevent thromboembolic were taken during the procedure, both with the use of the low molecular weight heparin and compression stockings.

"We emphasise that the Hospital is collaborating fully with the competent authorities."

The attending doctor has been named Lucas Mendes.

His defence team said in a statement: "The patient was properly informed of the risks inherent to the procedure, giving her full consent.

"All necessary exams were carried out to prove she could undergo liposculpture.

"The procedure lasted about four hours and was uneventful. The patient woke up from sedation in normal health conditions, without any discomfort or complaints.

"About 12 hours after the surgery, the patient became unstable and was immediately treated and medicated by hospital staff and the surgeon.

"After her condition worsened and she went into cardiorespiratory arrest, the patient was attended by an emergency team, but could not resist and passed away."

The defence team stated that the doctor in charge is fully licensed to carry out the procedure, adding: "We are collaborating with the authorities and family members in every way."

The investigation into the latest incident is ongoing.
