Woman dies in tragic house fire in Roscommon as emergency services rush to scene

An elderly woman has died after a house fire in Co Roscommon.

Emergency services rushed to the scene in Ballaghdereen on Sunday evening around 9pm after receiving reports of a house on fire.

Gardaí, ambulance personnel and the local fire services attended the scene but were unable to save the woman, who was aged in her 70s.

Her body was recovered from the house and she was pronounced dead. It's understood the woman lived alone.

Her body has been removed to Roscommon Mortuary for a post mortem examination. Gardaí have sealed off the scene pending a technical examination.

In a statement to the Irish Mirror, a Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances of a house fire in Ballaghdereen, Co. Roscommon yesterday evening Sunday 16th October 2022.

"Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene including local fire services.

"The body of a woman aged in her 70s was recovered from the house and pronounced deceased. Her body has been removed to Roscommon Mortuary.

"The coroner has been notified and a post mortem is scheduled to take place.

"The scene is currently preserved for a technical examination. Investigations are ongoing."
