Friend witnesses fatal plane crash on Tasmanian farm

A friend of those on board saw the crash happen, police said.

A woman has died and a male passenger is in hospital after a light plane crash on private property in Tasmania's north-east.

The single-engine Cessna 182 was attempting to land on a runway on a private property in Boobyalla near Tomahawk about 4:30pm on Saturday when the incident happened, police said.

"A plane attempted to land on the airfield … missed the runway and has clipped a tree at the end of the runway resulting in it crashing," Inspector Michael Johnston said.

"A 63-year-old female occupant of the plane was deceased in transit to the Launceston General Hospital and a 68-year-old male occupant of the aircraft is in the Launceston General Hospital."

Inspector Johnston said one of the residents of the property had been watching their friends arrive and witnessed the crash.

"They're Sheffield locals and were flying to visit the occupants of the farm," he said.

"One of the residents of the farm was a witness to the crash when it occurred."

Australian Transport Safety Bureau staff are investigating the crash.
