A woman has died in an incident at an aqueduct in Wales, police have confirmed. The woman, who has not yet been named publicly, is understood to have died at Chirk Aqueduct, a 70-foot high and 710-foot long aqueduct near Chirk, Wrexham, on the England-Wales border, on Friday morning. North Wales Police has confirmed the woman's death is not being treated as suspicious and her family have been informed.
As reported by North Wales Live, North Wales Police issued a statement this afternoon confirming officers were called to a "concern-for-safety" incident at the aqueduct this morning. "We were called shortly before 8am today, (Friday, June 16) to a concern-for-safety incident on Chirk Aqueduct," the statement reads. "Officers attended the scene, where a woman sadly died. The death is not being treated as suspicious and her family, and the Coroner’s Office, have been informed."
The statement comes after officers closed off the aqueduct and surrounding paths earlier today. Locals were urged to avoid the area and motorists were asked to find alternative routes.
The Welsh Ambulance Service also attended the scene, supported by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service, and fire crews were also in attendance. A spokesperson for the Welsh Ambulance Service said: "We were called today, Friday 16 June, at approximately 8.19am, to an incident at Chirk Aqueduct. We sent one rapid response vehicle and one emergency ambulance to the scene. We were supported by colleagues from the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service."
