A woman has died in a glider crash at a rural airfield while the pilot has been flown to hospital with serious injuries.

The single glider crash happened shortly before 2pm AEDT on Sunday in Tunbridge in Tasmania's southern midlands.

The woman in her early 50s died from her injuries at the scene, Tasmania Police confirmed in a statement.

A Tasmanian man in his 60s, who was operating the two-seater glider, has been airlifted to Royal Hobart Hospital with serious injuries.

Tasmania Police Inspector Aleena Crack said the man and woman were part of a group, which included the woman's husband, who were at the private airfield.

"There was a larger group of people at the airfield at the time, and this is obviously a tragic outcome for these families and friends," Inspector Crack said.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash and emergency crews remain at the scene.
