A woman has died in the Whitsundays after having a medical episode while snorkelling in waters off Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays.

Police say emergency services responded to a call-out around midday for a woman aged in her 50s being brought to shore in a critical condition.

Those on a commercial tourism vessel, on which the woman was travelling, were already performing CPR.

The CQ Rescue helicopter was called but soon stood down.

The woman was brought to the boat ramp at Coral Sea Marina where critical care paramedics were waiting.

It's the second death to occur in the Whitsundays in a week.

Last Monday, a newlywed was killed on her honeymoon after the buggy her husband was driving rolled.
