Woman dies from burns after heat pump electrical fault

The fire was caused by an electrical fault in a lounge room heat pump.

A Hobart woman flown to a Melbourne hospital with severe burns after a house fire has died from her injuries.

The 58-year-old woman rang emergency services from her Kingston home in the early hours of Friday when a smoke alarm alerted her to the blaze.

She suffered serious burns and was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital before being flown to Melbourne for treatment.

An Alfred Hospital spokesman said the woman was in a critical condition when she arrived, but had since died from her injuries.

Tasmania Fire Service said smoke was coming from the front window when emergency services arrived.

Fire investigators said the fire started in the woman's loungeroom and after an electrical fault in a heat pump.

Regional Fire Investigator Matt Lowe used the incident to remind the public of the importance of fire safety.

"You should have a smoke alarm not only in the recommended outside your bed but any room you sleep in," he said.

Damage at the property was estimated to be about $250,000.
