Woman dies following gas explosion on Shetland after home collapsed around her

An elderly woman has died following a gas explosion at an island home.

The 84-year-old was taken to hospital after the blast in the Shetland village of Brae on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency services were scrambled to the destroyed property in Ockragarth estate, known locally as Toy Town, at around 2.15pm.

Peggy Griffiths, 84, was in her home in Ocragarth yesterday afternoon when the blast happened.

Her grandson, Philip, was in an upstairs room at the time of the incident.

He apparently rolled out of the collapsed building from an upstairs bedroom and was taken to hospital for treatment to minor injuries

Peggy was taken to the Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick where she sadly died later.

Chief Inspector Lindsay Tulloch said: “Our thoughts are with the lady’s family and friends at this very difficult time for them.

“Inquiries to establish the full circumstances are ongoing with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

“However, there are no apparent suspicious circumstances.

“A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal in due course.”

Neighbours helped the woman from the house and tended to her while waiting for an ambulance.

Firefighters were seen dousing the building in water to keep dust down from the asbestos roof of the collapsed structure.
