A woman died four days after she was hit by a vehicle in the Back of the Yards on the South Side.

At 4:11 a.m. on Oct. 18, a 21-year-old man was driving an Audi west in the 800 block of West Garfield Boulevard when he swerved left to avoid hitting a vehicle that abruptly stopped in front of him at Halsted Street, according to Chicago police. Westbound traffic had the green light at the time.

As the Audi was re-entering the traffic lane, it hit the 71-year-old woman, who was walking north across Garfield in the crosswalk, police said. Witnesses told investigators the woman was crossing the street against the light.

She was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 6:22 p.m. on Tuesday, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. An autopsy found she died of multiple injuries caused by the vehicle striking her and her death was ruled an accident.

No citations were issued to the driver of the Audi, police said. Area Central detectives are investigating.
