Woman dies after house catches fire in Wythenshawe

A woman has died after a house caught fire in Wythenshawe.

Firefighters were called to Haveley Road in Benchill shortly after 6pm today (Friday).

Greater Manchester Police has confirmed that a woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

A joint investigation between GMP and the fire service is underway.

It's understood that the fire started in the lounge of the property.

A GMP spokesperson said: "Police were called by the fire service shortly before 6.20pm to a report of a house fire at an address on Haveley Road, Manchester.

"A woman has sadly been pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin has been informed.

"There aren't believed to be any other occupants inside the address. "

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 6.08pm to a fire involving a semi-detached house on Haveley Road in Wythenshawe.

"Four fire engines from Wythenshawe, Altrincham and Stockport attended.

"The fire is now out. One fire engine and a fire investigation unit is at the scene."
