Woman dies after falling onto the Quayside from the Tyne Bridge

A woman has died after falling from the Tyne Bridge.

Emergency services were called to the Quayside on Saturday evening with reports of the incident.

Paramedics and police attended near to the Akenside Traders pub on Dean Street at around 8.30pm and treated the woman.

However, police said she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: "At about 8.30pm this afternoon police received a report that a woman had fallen from the Tyne Bridge and landed on the pavement near to the Akenside pub.

"Emergency services attended the scene but sadly the woman was pronounced dead a short time later.

"There is not believed to be any third party involvement and a report has been prepared for the coroner."

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service added: "We got a call at 8.23pm to reports of a person having fallen from height.

"There was a critical care nurse on scene who commenced CPR.

"We sent five resources including two Hazardous Area Reponse Teams and a specialist paramedic.

"Unfortunately, despite our best efforts the patient had suffered a catastrophic head trauma.

"Our thoughts are with the family."
