Woman dies after diving incident at famous shipwreck spot off Cornwall

A woman in her 50s has died following a diving incident off the coast of Cornwall.

A major rescue operation was launched on Wednesday after the skipper of a dive boat issued a mayday alert.

A coastguard spokesperson said the woman was among a group of people who were diving at The Manacles - a set of treacherous rocks off the Lizard peninsula.

The Coastguard search and rescue helicopter and the Falmouth lifeboat were tasked to the scene, reports Cornwall Live.

The woman, from Oxfordshire, was winched from the dive boat to the helicopter and airlifted to Royal Cornwall Hospital, where she was sadly pronounced dead.

Police say they are treating the death as unexplained at this time.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: "Police have been informed of the death of a woman at Royal Cornwall Hospital on Wednesday, 28 August.

"It’s understood that the woman was pulled from the water at St Keverne earlier in the day.

"A woman in her 50s from, Oxfordshire, was confirmed deceased in hospital. Her next of kin are aware.

"The death is currently being treated as unexplained and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
