Woman dies after crash involving bin lorry

A woman died following a crash involving a bin lorry.

Emergency services were called at 7am today, Wednesday, July 5, to the junction of Broad Oak Road and Delta Road in St Helens after a crash involving a white Ford Fiesta and a bin wagon.

The woman, who was a passenger in the car and in her 40s, was left with a serious head injury and paramedics took her to hospital for urgent treatment. She died in hospital a short time later.

A 43-year-old man from St Helens was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He is now in police custody to be questioned. The driver of the bin lorry assisted police with their enquiries.

Detective Sergeant Kurt Timpson from the MATRIX serious collision investigation unit said: “Her next of kin have been informed and specially trained officers are supporting them at this extremely difficult time and our thoughts are very much with them.

“Any road death causes a huge amount of heartache to family and friends left behind. My team will work relentlessly to get answers for the lady’s family and as such I would appeal directly to anyone who witnessed this incident or who has any information that may help to please contact the incident team.

“I appeal directly to anyone who witnessed the incident, or anyone has information that may help to please contact the incident team. In addition, if you live locally or were in the area at the time and have any CCTV or dash camera footage please get in touch.”

Broad Oak Road is still currently closed between Boardmans Lane and Ashton Green Drive. Police have asked for drivers to avoid the area today.
