A 37-year-old woman died after she was shot in the back of her head last week while traveling in a vehicle in the Cragin neighborhood on the Northwest Side.
The woman was identified as Maria Reveron of Cragin by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
She was a front-seat passenger in a southbound car in the 2600 block of North Long Avenue, near Diversey Avenue, about 8:40 p.m. March 24, according to Chicago police spokeswoman Sally Bown.
The driver noticed a black SUV following closely from behind, heard a gunshot and then realized the passenger was shot in the back of her head, Bown said. The driver turned right onto Wrightwood Avenue while the SUV continued south.
The woman was taken in grave condition to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Bown said. It was unclear from a police report if she was the target of the shooting, Bown said. Police recovered one shell casing in the 2600 block of North Long.
Reveron died two days later on March 26, according to the medical examiner’s office. Her autopsy results haven’t been released.
