Woman dies after choking while eating steak dinner with her family at home

A retired nurse died after choking while sitting down for dinner with her husband and daughter at her home in Derby.

Bronwyn Morley, 77, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest as a result of choking on a meal of steak and potato wedges.

Derby Coroner's Court heard that daughter Polly raised the alarm to husband Roy by saying: "Mum is not doing too well and is going blue."

An ambulance was called on the evening of November 22 last year, DerbyshireLive reported .

After the ambulance arrived, Mrs Morley was resuscitated by paramedics, who extracted the food with a pair of forceps and took her to the Royal Derby Hospital.

On arrival at the hospital, she had an extremely low reading of three on the Glasgow Coma Scale, and was subsequently given end of life care.

She died at 12.50pm the following day.

A post-mortem report by Dr Amandeep Mann confirmed Mrs Morley's cause of death as cerebral hypoxia, or reduced supply of oxygen.

Born in Ossett, Yorkshire, on August 26, 1941, Mrs Morley suffered from pulmonary disease and vertigo in later life.

She was described by Dr Mann as an elderly woman who was thin and frail.

In her conclusion, assistant coroner Kathryn Hayes said: "Mrs Morley died after a choking episode whilst eating dinner at home with her family.

"This is a sad and sudden death, but a straight-forward inquest. She died an accidental death.

"She was simply eating her dinner, no one could've predicted the shocking consequences.

"I offer my sincere condolences to her husband and daughter who were with her at the time."
