Woman dies after being stung by a wasp while out for lunch in popular Spanish town

A woman died while out for lunch on Monday afternoon in Spain after she went into cardiac arrest from being stung by a wasp.

The British woman, believed to be in her 60s, was dining at the Hill Top sports bar and grill near the popular hotspot, Benidorm, at the time of the tragic incident.

According to reports, she is said to have suffered anaphylactic shock, and although paramedics tried to resuscitate her by performing CPR, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Local reports are claiming that she lived in the area and was with family and friends at around 2:00 pm on Monday afternoon.

"Officers attended the restaurant where the incident occurred after a British woman aged 68 was stung by a wasp," a spokesperson for the Spanish Civil Guard said.

"She was being assisted by emergency medical responders on the restaurant terrace when they arrived.

"She was subsequently transferred to an ambulance where she died after going into cardiac arrest,’ the spokesperson continued.

"A doctor certified her dead around 3:00 pm local time yesterday."

According to WebMD, the severity of an insect sting reaction varies from person to person.

While most people’s reaction to a wasp sting will simply result in pain, swelling and redness confined to the sting site, a more severe reaction can result in swelling that extends beyond the sting site.

For example, a sting on the forearm could result in the entire arm swelling - but this condition is often treated the same as a normal reaction.

Then, there are a number of instances when an unusually painful or very large local reaction may need medical attention and can result in death, as was the case in this incident.

There has been no comment from the establishment in the aftermath of the tragedy after many outlets attempted to make contact.
