A woman has died after being knocked down by a police van in Motherwell, it's been confirmed.
The horror incident took place at around 8.20pm last night (Sunday) on the town's Merry Street.
The 58-year-old was rushed to hospital but was tragically pronounced dead shortly after.
Police say the marked van was on routine duties at the time of the collision and did not have blue lights or sirens activated. Two officers were in the vehicle at the time and none of them were injured.
The 58-year-old's family have been made aware, with the force launching a full investigation into the incident.
A police statement issued this evening advised: "Police Scotland is appealing for witnesses after a female pedestrian died after being involved in a collision with a police vehicle in Motherwell.
"The incident happened shortly after 8.20pm on Sunday, 19 September on Merry Street in the town.
"The 58-year-old woman was taken to the University Hospital Wishaw but was pronounced dead a short time later.
"Her next of kin has been made aware and are being supported by specialist officers.
"The marked Ford Transit van was on routine duties at the time of the incident and did not have blue lights or sirens activated.
"Neither of the two police officers who were within the car at the time were injured.
"An investigation into the circumstances is being carried out by Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit and the incident has been referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC)."
Sergeant John Tait, of the Road Policing Unit in Motherwell, said: "Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing and I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has any other information to come forward.
"We would be particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam or private CCTV footage from the area.
"Anyone with information can call 101, quoting incident 3309 of 19 September."
