Woman dies after being hit by marked police van on Scots street

A 58-year-old woman has died after being hit by a police van on Scots street at the weekend.

The woman was struck down by the emergency vehicle around 8.20pm on Merry Street in Motherwell.

She was rushed to University Hospital Wishaw but could not be saved and was pronounced dead a short time later.

The marked Ford Transit van was on routine duties at the time of the incident and did not have blue lights or sirens activated.

Neither of the two police officers who were within the car at the time were injured.

The woman's next of kin has been made aware and are being supported by specialist officers.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash will now be carried out by Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit as the incident has also been referred to official watchdog, the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC).

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is being urged to get in touch.

Sergeant John Tait, of the Road Policing Unit in Motherwell, said: “Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing and I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has any other information to come forward.

“We would be particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam or private CCTV footage from the area.

“Anyone with information can call 101, quoting incident 3309 of 19 September.”
