Woman dies after being dropped on the floor during surgery on hip broken in hospital

A woman who was dropped during surgery on her hip which she broke in hospital has died.

Jeanette Shields had been in Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle for gall stone treatment when she had the accident.

The 70-year-old had got up to go to the toilet, having had no response to her buzzer, when she slipped, her husband said.

The fall left Jeanette with a broken hip which she received surgery on two days later.

John Shields, 78, said after the operation he received a call from the hospital saying "unfortunately" Jeanette had been dropped off the table at the end of the procedure.

"Then they had to use the sliding board to pick her up and rush her in and do scans on her," the grieving husband told the BBC.

John said he was "really shocked" by what happened (family photograph)

"She had a great big bump on the back of her head and she just deteriorated and then she just passed away, just died.

"I'm shocked, I'm really shocked."

The couple's daughter Vikki said the family later alerted nurses to a large bump on Jeanette' head.

Six weeks after the operation, on May 21, the OAP died.

John says he was told there would not be a post-mortem following her death, something which he then pushed for.

North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Trust said an investigation was under way into the incident.

A spokesperson for the trust said that it had informed its regulators but was unable to comment on ongoing investigations.

John said the way the hospital had dealt with the situation was "disgusting".
