A woman has died after being bitten by a dog while defending her own pet from attack.
Sharon Jennings, 55, intervened when the two animals began fighting in Preston, Lancashire, on the evening of 31 May.
She was bitten on the hand and neck while her pet was bitten on the ear during the incident on old railway lines in Brookfield.
Ms Jennings did not seek medical attention and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital on Monday after being found unwell at her home. She died on Friday night.
Police are still trying to trace the dog and its owner.
The dog is described as a speckled ginger and black dog of medium height.
Its owner was described as a male with thinning grey-black hair and wearing a blue fleece type jacket.
Detective Inspector Chris Wellard, of Lancashire Constabulary, said: “Our thoughts are with Sharon’s family and friends at this incredibly distressing time.
“We’re working hard to establish what happened but need anyone with information to come forward as soon as possible. Did you see a dog matching this description in the area or see or hear anything around the time of the incident? Please get in touch.
“I would also appeal directly to the owner of the other dog to come forward.”
Ms Jennings’ pet suffered an injury to its ear and was treated by a vet.
