A woman has died after becoming trapped in the engine compartment of a train in Western Australia.

Police were alerted to a commotion after several people had gathered on a platform next to the stationary commercial train in Albany about 8.40pm on Friday.

Officers also received information that a woman might be in distress.

Once police arrived they discovered the woman had entered the train's engine carriage and become trapped.

She was unresponsive and unable to be freed or revived.

Police are not treating the woman's death as suspicious and will prepare a report for the coroner.
