Woman died of 'shock' after finding fiance dead in hotel bed on paradise holiday

A woman likely died of shock after finding her fiance dead beside her in their hotel bed, an official has said.

Cynthia Day and her fiance Nathaniel Holmes, from Maryland, US, were discovered dead in their hotel room in the Dominican Republic last month.

The couple are part of a series of tourists who died in mysterious circumstances in the Caribbean country in recent weeks.

However, Dominican Republic health officials do not believe the couple died because of foul play.

Ministry of Public Health spokesman Carlos Suero told Fox News: "They were a special case as far as US tourists.

"There were many bottles of prescription medication in their room. They practically carried around a pharmacy with them.

"They had pills for blood pressure , for the heart, they had anti-depressants. When you get on an airplane and travel with all that medical [baggage], this can happen."

He added that Cynthia probably died from the shock of waking up and seeing her partner dead.

The couple's relatives plan to have new autopsies performed after Dominican authorities said they died of respiratory failure and pulmonary edema, the New York Post reports.

Their bodies were found at the Grand Bahia Principe La Romana resort, where another American tourist died just days before.

Miranda Schaupp-Werner passed away after drinking from her mini bar, with some questioning whether her beverage was spiked.

Brits Emma Plappert and boyfriend Leigh Bailey returned from the Bahia Principe hotel last month and also questioned whether they had been poisoned.

As well as crippling stomach pains, intense exhaustion and red lumps on their legs, they have endured bloody diarrhea after flying back.

Nine Americans have died in the Dominican Republic in a year.
