Woman died from 'rare complications' of AstraZeneca's Covid vaccine

A patient died from ‘rare complications’ following a dose of the coronavirus vaccine, an inquest was told.

Dawn Williams died in hospital 16 days after being jabbed with the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine.

An inquest heard the 52-year-old, of Lochmaben Close, Crewe, was administered the jab on March 4, after which she began experiencing muscle aches, headaches and nausea, StokeonTrentLive reported.

Ms Williams, who had fibromyalgia, had been suffering from aching joints for the last four years. She had a brain injury following a fall down her stairs in 2001.

Following the coronavirus vaccination, her headaches worsened and she was admitted to Leighton Hospital in Crewe on March 18, where CT scans showed she had a haemorrhage.

She was transferred to Royal Stoke University Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery. But her health deteriorated and she was soon put into palliative care before she passed away.

Speaking at her inquest, Ms Williams’ partner Neil Woolley said: “I’m concerned about the effect the Covid-19 vaccine had on her.”

North Staffordshire assistant coroner Sarah Murphy said the cause of her death was venous sinus thrombosis and hemorrhagic venous infarction, with vaccine induced thrombosis caused by the complications of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine.

Pathologist Dr Louise Edwards said: “She had a severe headache and was admitted to the A&E at Leighton Hospital. A CT scan had shown a large bleed on the brain. She was sedated.

“A repeat scan showed progression of the bleed and she was transferred to the Royal Stoke. She had also developed a blood clot. She went for surgery, but continued to deteriorate. She died at the critical care unit.

“Venous infarction thrombosis is a very rare effect following vaccination with the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.”

Ms Murphy concluded that Ms Williams died from the ‘rare complications of the Oxford AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine’.

She added: “She was transferred to the Royal Stoke and underwent emergency craniectomy. She was taken to critical care. She had a platelet count of 24.

“The CT scan showed a haemorrhage. She was moved to palliative care.

“It was noted she developed four out of the five criteria for vaccine-induced thrombosis, which is a very rare effect.

“The conclusion is that the death was down to the rare complications of the Oxford AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.”

Dr Alison Cave, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency's Chief Safety Officer, said: “We were saddened to hear of Mrs Williams’ tragic death, and offer our deepest sympathies to her family.

"No effective medicine or vaccine is without risk. Our advice remains that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks in the majority of people.

"Over 119 million doses of vaccines against COVID-19 have now been administered in the UK, saving tens of thousands of lives through the biggest vaccination programme that has ever taken place in this country. It is vitally important that people come forward for their vaccination and for their booster doses when invited to do so.

"People should be reassured we continue to monitor the safety of all COVID-19 vaccines. We ask anyone who suspects they have experienced a side effect linked with their COVID-19 vaccine to report it to the Coronavirus Yellow Card website."
