Oct. 23--A 55-year-old woman died after riding Walt Disney World's Space Mountain this summer, according to a report recently filed with the state.
Pamela Lynn Haynes of Kingsport, Tenn., lost consciousness after getting off the ride in July and was transported to Florida Hospital Celebration Health's intensive care unit.
Haynes died of cardiopulmonary arrest and septic shock, according to information obtained by the Orange-Osceola Medical Examiner's Office. A doctor said Haynes' cause of death was related to her medical history, which included a history of hypertension, congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
The report to the state of Haynes' death was made public this week. The state's major theme parks must report serious injuries and deaths on a quarterly basis.
In previous years, three guests have died after falling unconscious on Space Mountain or soon after riding it. All three had pre-existing health conditions.
Guests waiting to board are warned they should be free from high blood pressure, heart, back or neck problems, motion sickness or other conditions.
The last ride-related deaths at Disney World happened last year on two of the resort's tamer attractions. A 22-year-old woman with a pre-existing condition died after losing consciousness after riding It's a Small World on Christmas Day. A 54-year-old woman died soon after passing out after riding Toy Story Midway Mania at Disney's Hollywood Studios in October.
