Woman devastated after car stolen on day of grandfather’s funeral

A woman visiting south Wales to attend her grandfather's funeral had her car stolen on the morning of the service.

The mum-of-two was staying with her husband and two children at her in-laws house when their Ford Ecosport was taken in the early hours from Penshannel in Neath Abbey on Monday, January 24.

And it is believed the vehicle could have been used in the later theft of a similar vehicle in Uplands, Swansea.

The mum said: "We travelled down from Oxford especially for the funeral, which was being held in Margam on Monday afternoon.

"My husband went out of the house in the morning and was running around to see if he could see the car.

"It meant we had to quickly sort out other arrangements so we could make it to the service in time.

"Luckily, my brother-in-law let us use his car and we insured ourselves so we could use that, otherwise we would have been looking at taking a taxi.

"We've used our brother-in-law's car to get back home and for a few days, but obviously that has to go back.

"It was the last thing we needed on the day of a funeral, and was very stressful".

After sharing an appeal for information about the vehicle, the family were contacted by someone who had their own Ford Ecosport stolen, with CCTV of the incident appearing to show the first stolen car being used.

The owner said it was taken from St James Gardens, Uplands, later the same morning.

She said: "My brother-in-law called me to ask if I was having any roadside service done to my vehicle, because he's been past and it looked like people from a garage were working on it.

"It was the first time I had used the car for work since Christmas, as my husband normally drops me.

"I had my children's car seats in there as well, because I use the car to take them from school".

A spokesman for South Wales Police said: "We were called just after 8.10am on Monday, January 24, following reports of a car having been stolen from Penshannel, Neath Abbey. The incident is still under investigation.

"We were also called around 10am on Monday, January 24, following reports of a car having been stolen from St James Gardens, Uplands.

"The incident has been investigated as far as reasonably possible and no further lines of enquiry to identify the suspect exist at this time. The case will be reinvestigated should new information become available" .
