Woman detained under Mental Health Act following incident in Bristol city centre

A woman was detained under the Mental Health Act after police and the fire service were called to Bristol city centre last night (November 25).

Colston Street was closed to both vehicles and pedestrians following the incident that happened at around 5.30pm.

An eyewitness told Bristol Live that the closure caused gridlock on Upper Maudlin Street, with a fire engine stationed at the top by the Colston Arms and another next to Zero Degrees.

However, by 6.25pm, Colston Street had reopened and the traffic cleared on Upper Maudlin Street.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "Police and fire crews responded to reports of concern for the welfare of a woman in Colston Street, Bristol at about 5.30pm on Friday 25 November.

"The woman was detained under the Mental Health Act at about 6.15pm and taken to hospital."
