Woman detained under Mental Health Act after flat fire in Rochdale

A woman has been detained under the Mental Health Act after a fire broke out at a flat in Rochdale. Emergency services were called to the scene in Albion Street, Castleton, at about 11.30am on Sunday (July 3).

Police said they had received reports of 'concern for a female'. The fire involved a flat on the first floor of a two-storey building.

Fire crews were able to bring the flames under control. A woman was taken to hospital following the incident.

The extent of her injuries have not been revealed, although police say she has since been detained under the Mental Health Act. Pictures from the scene show the road taped off with police cars and an ambulance present.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “At around 11.30am yesterday (3 July), we were called to reports of a fire in a flat on the first floor of a two-storey complex on Albion Street, Rochdale.

“Three fire engines from Rochdale and Blackley quickly attended the scene and extinguished the fire using specialist equipment including two hose reels, breathing apparatus and a positive pressure ventilation fan.

“One woman was assessed by North West Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation and conveyed to hospital. Crews were detained for approximately one hour.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police added: "On Sunday 3 July at around 11:30am, officers were called to an incident on Albion Street, Rochdale. Other emergency services also attended the scene where there was concern for a female who was subsequently detained under the Mental Health Act. Enquiries are still ongoing."
