A large pane of glass fell from an office building and shattered into pieces on the pavement directly next to a Co-op store in Leeds city centre this evening (Thursday).
The incident, which happened at around rush hour, saw the loop road closed on Swinegate after a window fell from an office at 3 Sovereign Square. Eyewitnesses say it fell six storeys, from the top floor of the building.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, although LeedsLive understands that no one was injured in the incident.
The Co-op remained closed throughout the evening as police erected a cordon outside the store.
Arienne Panayi works in Chaophraya, which is directly opposite the office block, and saw the window fall from the building 'bit by bit'.
"It just started with loads of glass shatters falling from the sky," she told LeedsLive.
"Loads of people crowded round and looked up. Bit by bit - because the wind was so intense - larger pieces were falling from the sky. It was an ongoing thing. It was so bizarre.
"It started with a little triangle and then gradually the window starting swaying and falling. And then in mid air it was falling apart aswell. Quite big bits. They were breaking on their way down."
Swinegate had reopened by 8pm, although one lane remain closed as police blocked off the side of the road next to the building.
