Woman describes 'explosion' after lightning strikes property in Mapperley street

A woman has described the moment she "jumped out of her skin" as a lightning bolt struck a residential street in Mapperley.

June Gaskell said she heard an "explosion" after the lightning struck a shed in her neighbour's back garden, leaving "steam rising like fog" all down Warton Avenue on April 25.

Mrs Gaskell, 55, was doing her cleaning while her two daughters were upstairs when the lighting struck, leaving the entire street without internet, television and phone signal, she said.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and confirmed that a shed had been struck by lighting during a thunderstorm.

Mrs Gaskell said: "I was cleaning in the kitchen and it was like there was an explosion. All the alarms went off down the street and there was steam everywhere, rising like fog.

"I just freaked out. I jumped in the air. There was this bright white light, so I phoned the fire brigade. They even said they could hear and feel the street rumbling.

"When it struck, the building was rumbling and trembling and my daughters were terrified. They said they saw it but hid when it struck.

"I can't use my Virgin internet and my phone line is down."

Richard Pearson, 61, a friend of Mrs Gaskell's of 32 years, said that from his home in Bellevue Court, he saw a "bright flash followed by an explosion of noise"

"I was outside talking to the workmen in my street and I saw this bright flash followed by an explosion of noise," he said.

"The next thing I know, June said to ring her urgently because lightning had struck next door and that she had called the fire brigade.

"I had no idea it was so close to her at the time. June was quite shocked.

"I've been on the phone to Virgin Media but they haven't been very helpful. I would have thought it was an urgent issue."

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews from Arnold were called to Warton Avenue at 2.07pm where a shed had been struck by lightning.

"On attendance, the fire was out and no further action was taken by firefighters.

"They had left the scene by approximately 2.30pm."

A spokesman for Virgin Media said an engineer was currently at the scene trying to resolve the problem.
