Aug. 21--A woman was shot to death and at least 13 others were wounded in separate shootings since late Thursday morning on the West and South sides, police said.
A 21-year-old woman was shot to death and two men were wounded during an exchange of gunfire outside a liquor store in the South Austin neighborhood around 2:08 a.m. Friday, police said.
The woman, a 25-year-old man and a 20-year-old man were inside a vehicle the liquor store's parking lot in the 300 block of North Cicero Avenue when they started arguing with another car in the lot, said Chicago Police Department spokesman Officer Ron Gaines.
The 20-year-old man started firing gunshots at the car. Two armed security guards came out of the liquor store and fired shots at the vehicle with the 20-year-old man, striking the two men and the woman, Gaines said.
The car then tried to flee the shooting but stopped four blocks away near a Chicago Fire Department station in the 4900 block of West Chicago Avenue, police said.
The 21-year-old woman was shot twice in the head and once in the arm. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, police said.
A bullet struck the 25-year-old man in the shoulder and exited through his cheek. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said.
The 20-year-old man was hit in the hand and was taken to Mount Sinai, where his condition stabilized. Charges are pending against him, Gaines said.
Early Friday, pools of blood stained the sidewalk in front of the fire station on Chicago Avenue.
Police officers cordoned off the blood trail with yellow and red tape.
Four blocks south, officers investigated the scene by the liquor store.
At least 18 yellow evidence markers peppered the sidewalk and the west side of the road next to the store.
Officers blocked off Cicero Avenue north of Lake Street with yellow tape as they examined the scene.
In other shootings:
--A 34-year-old woman was shot around 2:56 a.m. Friday while she was lying in bed at a home in the Morgan Park neighborhood on the Far South Side, Gaines said.
The woman was inside the home in the 1300 block of West 108th Place when a bullet went through the window and struck her arm, Gaines said.
She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where her condition stabilized, Gaines said.
--About 11:45 p.m. Thursday, a 19-year-old man was critically wounded after a drive-by shooting in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side, said Chicago Police Department spokesman Officer Hector Alfaro.
The man was standing on a sidewalk in the 4800 block of West Jackson Boulevard when someone fired shots at him from a passing white sedan, Alfaro said.
The man was hit in the left side of his chest and was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical but stable condition, Alfaro said.
--About 11:40 p.m., a 22-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the Cottage Grove Heights neighborhood on the Far South Side, Alfaro said.
The man was sitting on a porch in the 9500 block of South Woodlawn Avenue when he heard gunshots and realized he was struck, Alfaro said.
The man was hit in the leg and was taken in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center.
--Around the same time, at 11:40 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was wounded in a shooting in the Englewood neighborhood, Alfaro said.
The teen was standing on a corner in the 6600 block of South Lowe Avenue when an unknown male attacker approached him and fired multiple times, Alfaro said.
The 17-year-old was hit in the mouth and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized, Alfaro said.
--About 10:05 p.m., a 24-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were wounded in a shooting during an attempted robbery in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, Alfaro said.
The 24-year-old man was standing outside with a female in the 7400 block of South Morgan Street when two male attackers approached them and announced a robbery at gunpoint, Alfaro said.
The man took out a gun and fired at the attackers, who also fired shots in the process, Alfaro said.
The 24-year-old shot and wounded one of the attackers, a 17-year-old boy, in the chest, Alfaro said. The man himself was shot in the leg.
The second attacker fled the scene, police said.
The man was taken to Advocate Christ, where his condition stabilized. The teenager was also taken to Advocate Christ, where he was listed in critical condition.
No one was in custody in connection with the shooting early Friday, Alfaro said.
--About 5:29 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was wounded after being shot in the back in the 6800 block of South Justine Street in the Englewood neighborhood, police said.
He was taken to Advocate Christ in critical condition. Police said the teen is a known gang member.
--About 2:20 p.m., a 25-year-old man was shot in the 4900 block of West Crystal Street in the Austin neighborhood, police said.
The man suffered a gunshot wound to his chest, police said, and managed to get himself to Norwegian-American Hospital. He was in critical but stable condition, and police said he is a known gang member.
--At 1:54 p.m., two men were shot during the same incident in the 900 block of North Winchester Avenue in the East Ukrainian Village neighborhood, police said.
A 25-year-old man was shot in the arm and a 24-year-old man was shot in the side, according to police. The men got themselves to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said. Officials believe the incident was drug-related.
--Earlier Thursday, a man was shot at 10:10 a.m. in the 6200 block of South Marshfield Avenue in the West Englewood neighborhood, police said. The 25-year-old was shot in the leg and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was not known.
Police believe the man was wounded in a drive-by shooting.
No other information was available about the shootings, and police were still investigating.
