Woman dead and child fighting for life after tree crushes family car

A woman has died and a man and two children are fighting for their lives after their car was crushed under a falling tree.

The group were driving along in Victoria, Australia when the tragic accident took place.

The male driver suffered traumatic injuries and was airlifted to hospital where he remains in critical condition.

One child was transported to the Royal Children's Hospital with serious head injuries while another child is in stable condition.

The female passenger,  yet to be identified, died at the scene.

The tragedy comes as thunderstorms continue to sweep across Victoria, Australia, bringing heavy winds, strong coastal waves and falling debris across the region.

The State Emergency Service received more than 400 calls across Victoria on Thursday as Melbourne's coasts continue to bear the brunt of the storm.

Shocking videos show ferocious waves crashing on Frankston's pier as residents flee for safety.

Australia's southeast continues to experience strong winds of up to 100kmph, a spokeswoman for SES said.

The Department of Transport's Chris Miller told 3AW radio: "Be aware of potential hazards caused by the severe weather .

"Hazards include damaged buildings, trees down, fallen power lines, debris and coastal erosion."

Temperatures continue to drop across south-eastern states bringing in icy weather and strong gales in what meteorologists say is the region's coldest time of the year.

Dozens of flights were cancelled over weather warnings, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded in Melbourne and Sydney airports.

Around 8,000 houses in South Australia were left without power on Thursday after thunderstorms struck the region.
