Woman dead, 3 others hurt in car crash on South Side

March 20--A 64-year-old woman died and three others were hurt after two cars crashed Saturday evening in the Woodlawn community area on the South Side.

About 7:50 p.m., an Infiniti sedan was traveling east in the 1600 block of East Hayes Drive when it ran through a traffic signal and struck a Toyota SUV, said Officer Veejay Zala, a Chicago police spokesman.

A 64-year-old woman, a passenger in the Infiniti, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she died, Zala said.

The woman was identified as Emma Balenton-Evans, of the 8000 block of South Merrill Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. She was pronounced dead at 8:30 p.m.

A 56-year-old woman, who was driving the Toyota, was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, and a 65-year-old man, who was a passenger in the Toyota, was taken to Northwestern, police said. The conditions of both were not immediately available.

The driver of the Infiniti, Robert Evans, 56, was also hurt, and he was taken to Northwestern for treatment. His condition was also not readily available.

Evans was issued citations for driving without insurance and for disobeying a traffic signal, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago police spokeswoman.

The Police Department's major accidents unit is investigating.
