Woman cut free from car and taken to hospital after serious crash between Blackhall and Horden

A woman was taken to hospital after her car collided with a traffic barrier.

Durham police were called to a report of an accident on the Coast Road between Blackhall and Horden at around 6.20pm on Monday,

When officers rushed to the scene they found the driver, a woman believed to be in her 40s, had collided with a traffic barrier.

The fire service attended the scene where they assisted in cutting the woman out of her car.

The woman was then taken to James Cook University Hospital for further assessment and treatment.

Police have said the road remained closed for around three hours last night to assist the woman and to clear the road of debris.

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: "We were called at approximately 6.20pm last night to a single-vehicle RTC on the Coast road between Horden and Blackhall.

"Officers attended and found a Fiat car with a single occupant had collided with a traffic barrier, causing damage to the vehicle.

"The driver, a woman who is believed to be in her 40s, was cut free by the fire service and was taken to James Cook University Hospital by ambulance.

"The road was closed for approximately three hours while the driver was cut free and debris was cleared from the road."
