Woman cut free from car after horrific motorway crash

Dramatic photographs have been shared revealing the damage to a vehicle following a crash on the M6 this morning.

Miles of traffic were reported as emergency services closed the northbound section of the motorway between junction 26 (M58 Orrell Interchange) and junction 27 (A5209 Crow Orchard Road Standish).

North West Motorway Police shared the images on social media as it was confirmed to drivers the M6 will remain closed for most of the day.

This is to allow for repairs and resurfacing.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 6.30am on January 7.

Firefighters had to cut free a woman trapped in a car following the crash, but thankfully, no serious injuries were reported.

Images shared by North West Motorway Police shows the extreme damage to one of the vehicles and the side barrier.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just before 6.30am on Friday 7 January, fire crews were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the M6 northbound between junction 26 and 27 near Wigan.

“Two fire engines from Wigan fire station, as well as the technical rescue unit from Leigh, quickly attended the incident. The collision involved one car.

“Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to remove a woman from the car, who was then transferred to the care of colleagues from North West Ambulance Service.

“Fire crews were in attendance for about an hour.”
