Woman crushed by handyman's voicemail saying she 'used to be pretty but isn't now'

After hiring a roofer to come and cover vents on top of her house, Daisy Mae Spain, didn't expect to hear from him again.

However, shortly after the man completed his task and left her home in Wirral, Merseyside, last month, she received a seven-minute voicemail from him.

The 27-year-old, who says the workman was recommended to her on an app, was stunned when she hit play on the message only to hear him criticising her appearance and calling her a "lazy slob".

In the voicemail, the man, who Daisy Mae believes to be about 60-years-old, could be heard saying that he'd seen an old picture of her on the app and "she used to be pretty but isn't now".

Daisy Mae said: "I was looking for someone to come and cover my vents in the roof because last year, some birds nested in the loft.

"He didn't come in, I met him at the door and pointed up. I had my joggers on and my hair in a bun because we're in a lockdown and that's what he's judged me on because he didn't come inside.

"As he left, he called to make sure it was my number but forgot to hang up.

"He said he'd seen my photo on the app and I used to be stunning but I'm not anymore. It was really hurtful, it just wasn't nice to hear and it was really strange because he was about 60 and I thought he was a nice older man.

"He just shouldn't have been making comments about my appearance."

She says the message knocked her confidence (Mercury Press & Media Ltd)

She continued to explain that she has fibromyalgia, which means her mobility is restricted and that like everyone else during lockdown, she's put on "a couple of pounds" over the last few months.

Daisy Mae also said that she has autism and can be "socially awkward" so she usually lets her husband answer the door.

"I really regretted answering it," she admits and says the situation left her feeling "humiliated" and "angry".

In response to the voicemail, Daisy Mae sent a text back confronting the handyman and calling out his "unprofessional" and "nasty" behaviour.

"He text back saying he was sorry and felt ashamed and he obviously was but it didn't take away what he'd said," she added.

"It really affected my self-esteem. It knocked my confidence and I really dipped for a few days. I felt like I needed to change myself completely."

However, looking back on the incident now, Daisy Mae says she sees it as a turning point and she's feeling more confident than ever - especially after experiencing some success at work at Ann Summers.

"After a few days I perked back up and realised that he doesn't matter, I have an amazing husband who absolutely loves me and I won the Woman Summers 2021 award which is my proudest achievement. It doesn't matter what an old man thinks.

"Women don't need to be accepted by others, they just need to accept themselves and love every part of themselves."
