Woman 'critical' after M5 accident which blocked motorway traffic southbound for nine hours

A woman is in a critical condition in hospital following a crash which closed the M5 for around nine hours .

Emergency services were called to the southbound carriageway just before 6am this morning (November 16) between junctions 22 and 23.

The motorway was closed following the crash , which involved a lorry and a car.

A woman in the car was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where she remains in a critical condition, police said.

Long queues of traffic built up during the closure, as police officers carried out investigation work.

The motorway was reopened at around 3.15pm.

Police have since made an appeal for anyone with dashcam footage of the crash to come forward.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: "We are pleased to confirm that our colleagues in Highways England have re-opened the M5 southbound from junction 22 following the serious collision this morning.

"We’d like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while we carried out an investigation at the scene.

"The motorway was closed from J22 southbound following the collision between a car and lorry shortly before 6am today.

"A woman car driver who suffered life threatening head injuries remains in hospital in a critical condition.

"Enquiries into the incident are continuing. We’re keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident who may have dashcam footage to help our collision investigators."
