Woman crashes into church during food drive, injuring 5

Oct. 03--Five people were taken to a hospital Saturday after a woman crashed through the front doors of a church near Grayslake and hit several people who were there for a food drive, pinning one of them, police said.

The 72-year-old woman had been in the parking lot of the Wildwood Presbyterian Church, 18630 West Old Gages Lake Road outside Grayslake, when the crash took place about 8:30 a.m. All those injured suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center, according to a release from the Lake County sheriff's office.

A food drive was going on at the church, with "numerous" people standing in line outside the church when the woman, who was in a 2002 Toyota Camry in the parking lot, drove into the church's front doors, hitting several people, as well as tables that were set up for the food drive, police said.

The most severely injured person was someone who became pinned between the car's front bumper and a wall inside the church, according to police. Fire crews were able to free her.

Several other people suffered minor injuries when they were hit by flying debris from the crash, but they were not taken to the hospital, police said.

The Lake County sheriff's crash unit was investigating.
