Woman collapses and dies after falling ill on Longbenton Metro station platform

A woman who fell ill at a Metro station collapsed and died despite efforts to save her life.

Emergency services were called to Longbenton Metro station at 7am on Wednesday after a woman collapsed on the platform.

The station was closed to the public and trains passed without stopping as paramedics tried to save the woman.

However, despite resuscitation attempts, she was pronounced dead.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "At about 7am we received a report that a woman had fallen unwell while waiting on the platform at Longbenton Metro station.

"Emergency services attended the scene and the station was closed so the woman could be treated by paramedics.

"Officers were also at the scene to assist medical staff but sadly the woman was pronounced deceased a short time later.

"There is not believed to be any third party involvement and her next of kin have been informed. A report will be prepared for the coroner in due course."

It is understood that the woman's death is not being linked to coronavirus.

The station was reopened to passengers at around 8am.
