Woman claims she was told to 'shut up and leave' Caffe Nero after row over face mask

A woman claims she was left "gobsmacked" after a Caffe Nero staff member told her to 'shut up and leave' for not wearing a face mask.

Rebekah Henry, 34, from Sherwood, was visiting the coffee shop in Forman Street, Nottingham, at around 4pm on Thursday, June 17.

Ms Henry, who wears a face mask exemption lanyard due to her anxiety, says she went to leave the shop after she was unhappy with the customer service she received from staff.

When she went to leave, Ms Henry told Nottinghamshire Live the staff member said something in her direction.

"She shouted at me 'well you should wear a mask'," Ms Henry claimed.

"I was clearly wearing my lanyard with my exemption card - I carry it with me every day. I put it on before I walk into any shop.

"She told me to 'shut up and get out the shop'. I thought 'you can't treat me like that'. It was just appalling customer service.

"I was gobsmacked. I suffer with anxiety - I wasn't aggressive, I wasn't rude, so I was really shocked."

The 34 year old, who used to work in the hospitality industry herself, says she has since made a complaint to the cafe about what happened.

Ms Henry wants to emphasise that some people have a hidden disability and this means they may not wear a face mask in shops.

She continued: "There has been people looking at me in certain ways and staff have asked me before if I have a mask, but I always show them my exemption card, explain and they understand.

"I always keep my distance, carry my hand sanitiser - I do everything I can to try and keep others safe.

"There's just no reasonable explanation for someone to treat me like that. Anxiety is a real thing and incidents like this always make it worse. It's just wrong."

Caffe Nero has been approached for comment.
