A Canadian man has filed a lawsuit against his ex-girlfriend after she allegedly won $5 million using a lottery ticket he claims he bought.
The lawsuit was filed in Manitoba's Court of King's Bench by Lawrence Campbell, who is suing his ex, Krystal Ann McKay, along with the Western Canada Lottery Corporation and Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries for $5 million.
Campbell stated that he bought himself a 6/49 lottery ticket on January 19, 2024 from a convenience store. Days later, Campbell scanned the barcode on the ticket and found that he had won the jackpot, CTV News reported.
"...that's when they found out he won, he couldn't believe it. He had won the Lotto 6/49 jackpot," the claim, obtained by the outlet, read.
Campbell and McKay then went to a Shoppers Drug Mart to verify their win. However, Campbell was allegedly told that he could not claim the winning ticket because he did not have a valid government-issued ID. The couple was reportedly advised to let McKay claim the win instead.
"It was really overwhelming, exciting," McKay said previously during a press conference where she told reporters that the ticket had been a birthday gift from Campbell.
"She had been asking me for three weeks to get a ticket, but I never went and got one," Campbell said at the time. "Then we drove by one, and I was like 'OK, I might as well go get you one right now.'"
McKay then received a $5 million deposit in her bank account. In the days following the win, she did not return to the hotel room she had been sharing with Campbell.
"(Campbell) states that that day he set out to visit a few of her known spots where she would party and sure enough after some investigation, he found her; in bed, with another guy," the claim stated.
No statements of defense have been filed yet.
