Woman 'chastised by stranger' for taking off her wedding ring after husband died

The thing about grief is there's no definitive pathway on how you move forward from losing someone you love.

It's perfectly normal to feel that loss keenly forever, and everyone has different ways to commemorate their loved one.

And being open about that loss, in a bid to help others who are struggling, can sometimes sadly invoke hurtful comments from strangers, who should know much better.

One woman, whose husband sadly died in 2017 from an asthma attack, has spoken openly about her loss - and tried to help others who are also struggling.

Jo Betz recently wrote a column for MamaMia about her decision to remove her wedding ring - and the wrath she faced from a complete stranger.

Author Jo was 35-years-old when her husband died suddenly from an asthma attack, a time she poignantly described as "my life and future completely unravelled."

Since then, she has shared moving aspects of her grief journey - in a bid to help others who are struggling with the incredibly tough process.

The mum recently shared how a stranger got in touch after she shared a post on social media - but not for positive reasons.

Jo wrote: "It had nothing to do with the content I was sharing, rather she had seen the accompanying photo of me, and noticed my lack of wedding ring and wanted to share her thoughts.

"As can often happen on the world wide web, it wasn’t overly positive. The reason she admonished me was because I am widowed and I don’t wear my wedding ring.

"While I won’t get into the nitty-gritty of what was said, it felt obvious that because I no longer wore my wedding ring, I had committed some kind of widow crime and that perhaps I didn’t truly love him."

The journey of grieving a loved one can be incredibly lonely, and Jo said she turned to Google in the months after her husband's death, trying to find the right thing to do.

And unsurprisingly, there was no "right" answer - as some pages suggested correct etiquette was to continue wearing it indefinitely, while others suggested she would know in her gut.

And Jo says she eventually decided to take off her rings around the four-month mark - because "it just kind of happened."

Listing a few reasons, Jo says she didn't frequently wear jewellery before getting married, and it wasn't uncommon for her to remove the rings for days at a time.

But more sensitively, she says she "didn't feel married anymore", with the ring sometimes feeling like a stark reminder of what had happened.

And she realised it was the right decision to remove the ring, when her husband's ring went missing - after their then four-year-old daughter mistakenly mislaid it while playing.

After the ring was found, she put both of them away for her daughter, in order to keep them safe for the future.

Reflecting on the incident, the mum-of-one said she was more "surprised than disappointed" by the stranger's feedback.

And she rightly highlighted that it is an individual journey for each widow, with their decision impossible to judge.

Jo added: "Our love is wrapped up in my beautiful memories and my heart, and I don’t need a wedding ring to prove that. I never did."
